Is Now the Right Time to Invest in a Bulk Carrier?

2026-10-08

Dry Bulk Market | October 2026

Buying a bulk carrier is not just about finding the right vessel at the right price. What really matters is whether the investment can still perform when the freight market turns against you.

A 12–15-year-old Handymax or Supramax may look attractive, especially with a period time charter already in place. But what happens when that charter expires? Will the vessel still cover its operating costs, loan repayments and upcoming dry-docking expenses if rates fall?

These are the questions worth asking before committing to a purchase.

The vessel's condition is equally important. A cheaper ship can quickly become an expensive investment if maintenance has been neglected or major repairs are approaching.

Financing also needs careful consideration. Borrowing heavily may work well during a strong market, but it leaves little room for error when earnings decline.

Our view is simple: a good investment should make financial sense even under conservative freight assumptions.

Opportunities will always exist in the second-hand bulk carrier market. The challenge is finding a vessel at the right price, with manageable financing and a realistic operating budget.

At Naviora Shipmanagement, we believe that protecting a vessel's long-term value matters just as much as its immediate earnings.

Buying the vessel is only the beginning. Managing it properly makes the difference.
